Gas Storage Studies

Gas storage reservoirs and operations are an important segment in the delivery of gas to the end-user market. Many facets of gas storage facilities, particularly porosity storage, are similar to the upstream producing properties that originally supply the gas. There are, however, many issues that are unique to storage operations. The NSAI Gas Storage team has been performing engineering and geologic evaluations of storage reservoirs for over 30 years and has accumulated relevant gas storage experience measured in tens of thousands of man-hours.

Our scope of work for porosity reservoirs generally includes:

  • Geologic assessment of the storage reservoir’s structure and trapping mechanisms along with assessment of surrounding reservoirs
  • Analysis of reservoir integrity and potential migration pathways
  • Review of historical storage facility performance, including hysteresis analysis
  • Material balance and reservoir simulation
  • Volumetric analysis
  • Field operations audit
  • Planning and implementation of optimization programs

Selected services include:

  • Assistance with regulatory filings such as the API RP 1171 requirements
  • Analysis of containment issues, along with estimates of the volume and location of migrated gas
  • Assistance with planning and monitoring
  • Consultation on operational issues
  • Expert witness testimony
  • Fair market valuations of original and native remaining gas
  • Gas migration studies
  • Horizontal well expertise
  • Geosteering guidance for drillwell replacement
  • Inventory verification studies
  • Reservoir modeling
  • Storage conversion studies, including estimation of working and base gas requirements needed for desired deliverability scenarios
  • Storage optimization studies, such as additional wells, horizontal replacement of vertical wells, and delta pressuring
  • Wellbore reviews, including all artificial penetrations of the storage facility and potential required corrective action
